| Riverbanks Zoo is recognized
as one of the best zoos in America for both its conservation efforts and
recreational opportunities. The Zoo uses the latest in exotic animal exhibit
techniques. Animals are seen in open, "natural habitat" exhibits. Live plants
and trees, boulders, ledges, pools and flowing water provide settings, which
allow the animals to move about freely and to recreate their wild behavior.
As a member of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, Riverbanks also participates in a number of Species Survival Plans (SSPs) which ensure that viable gene pools of selected endangered species are maintained in captivity. The Riverbanks program includes species ranging from Matschie's tree kangaroos to African lions to Aruba Island rattlesnakes. The Zoo has received numerous awards for its conservation programs. The Zoo 2002 program is the largest renovation and updating at Riverbanks Zoo since its opening. Some parts have already been completed, including a series of outdoor aviaries and the new Bird Conservation Center, a research and breeding facility.
