The Barbi Twins” shot to fame by posing together in two top-selling issues of Playboy and appearing in several internationally-distributed calendars. As adults, the identical sisters battled bulimia and have since taken to the lecture circuit as eating disorder spokeswomen. Their degree in nutrition helped them become authors of Dying To Be Healthy: A Breakthrough Diet, Nutrition, and Self Help Guide. Currently, these animal enthusiasts are dedicating a great deal of time, love and energy into their passion: animal rescue.

AF: Your passion for animals is inspiring!

BT: We have been animal fanatics all our lives. We just love all living creatures and are constantly fostering animals. It’s a revolving door at our place. We are so happy when we find good, loving homes for them. We don’t believe in organizations that do management by death. It’s up to us to spay and neuter. We are hoping Los Angeles will become “no kill” soon.

AF: You are both very involved with rescue. What message would you like to send?

BT: Do not buy animals! Buying is a fad, like a purse. Sometimes people want to buy an animal to match their Louis Vuitton bag and we worry about those people. Animals are not accessories. They were not put here for humans to use and abuse. We encourage everyone to go to their local shelter and rescue a pet! When you adopt, the animal becomes a family member. All our rescued animals are our children.

AF: Tell us about your bunny obsession.

BT: We are bunnies rescuing bunnies. Bunnies make excellent pets, but you need to do your research on how to care for them. With Easter coming up, people purchase bunnies as gifts or pets for kids, but those two don’t always mix. Bunnies are not toys and can be hurt easily. Kids are energetic and like a companion they can hold and cuddle. Bunnies feel frightened and insecure when held and restrained. Kids usually lose interest and bunnies end up neglected or abandoned. Just remember, bunnies require the same commitment as dogs and cats. They can live for up to 10-15 years! Take some time to speak with professionals and volunteers. Volunteers are the backbone of local shelters. They do the research, know about the animals and care about the animals. Check out: www.larabbits.org

AF Any projects you are nibbling on at the moment?

BT: We just finished a movie called “Your Mommy Kills Animals.” It’s a documentary on animal rights. We are also working on a rescue reality show. Our 2nd diet book is coming out: The Eco Anti-Diet. It teaches people how to wean themselves off meat, so they can have an animal free diet! It’s great.
