Friends of Animals Utah’s “Canines With a Cause”
Sundance 2012 is upon us! One of my favorite charities in the world is based in Park City! Since 1990 Friends of Animals Utah has blossomed from a group of Park City volunteers lobbying for a shelter space, to a full-fledged rescue agency with an adoption center and Rescue and Rehab Ranch. Throughout the past two decades Friends of Animals Utah’s goal has never changed, to “protect and provide for animals while fostering an awareness of their importance in our lives.” Now, as part of that initiative, Friends of Animals Utah has started their newest program, Canines With a Cause.
Canines With a Cause is a revolutionary dual therapy program developed to save the lives of unwanted rescue dogs, sometimes deemed “unadoptable” due to treatable health or behavioral problems in order to pair them with a veteran suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Symptoms of PTSD are at times scattered and difficult to treat. They include angry or emotional outbursts, sleep deprivation, feelings of detachment, lack of interest in everyday activities, poor concentration, nightmares, and continual reliving of traumatic events. A 2004 study done by the Pentagon found that 1 in 4 veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan return with symptoms of PTSD.
Canines with a Cause understands that the program saves not one, but two lives. For the animal, it gives them a second chance to prove they can make an outstanding companion. For the veteran, the dog becomes a loving support, and a social connection – a step towards feeling whole again and allowing them to reintegrate with society.
