Ron Chereskin: Men's Fashion Designer and Humanitarian By Luisa Nez One of New York City's top menswear designers, Ron Chereskin, struck his pose and imparted his runway to the cause of destitute animals. In his Fall 2000 runway show, which took place this past February in New York City's Bryant Park, models clad in the designer's latest fashions shared the spotlight with a dog or puppy from the Humane Society of New York. Each cuddly canine modeled its fashionable furs with the anticipation of winning a spectator's heart and a new home. The show was a gigantic hit, with each adoptee finding a safe and loving home within one week of its modeling debut. Mr. Chereskin feels that the show was a definite success and insists that the dogs, "certainly stole the show." He says, "having them backstage kept everyone in good spirits, and on stage, they really added to the 'lifestyle dressing' concept of my clothes." An ardent supporter of the Humane Society of New York, the fashion designer has an entire program running with clothes going to benefit Humane Societies across the United States. Mr. Chereskin is the proud owner of the dog world's wrinkled wonder, a 15-year-old Sharpei named Tina who got her name from a restaurant located on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Like most pet owners, Ron shares a very loving and caring relationship with his dog who pretty much gets to do whatever it is she pleases - even sleep on Mr. Chereskin's bed. When asked if shedding was a problem in his home, he, like most pet owners, finds shedding to be a reality of one's daily life where pets are involved. His opinion on the matter - "that's what vacuums are for!" Ron Chereskin has even tried his hand at some canine couture. Tina has her own Chereskin original - a colorful beaded collar as well as a fancy little tutu that she shows off at Halloween. Ron Chereskin, with an artistic sparkle in his eye from a young age began his career as a freelance illustrator, churning out trendy magazine covers as well as commissioned paintings and illustrations. The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., permanently exhibits one of these early illustrations. Mr. Chereskin has also tried his hand at home furnishings. The designer's ultimate crusade was to transform men's apparel into trendy yet comfortable styles that exude a distinct and sophisticated quality. Victorious in his campaign and all the rage nowadays, Ron Chereskin takes credit for the popularity of the everyday man's cotton sweater in a variety of soft shades, textures and patterns. Recognized for his outstanding sportswear and signature designs, Mr. Chereskin has received both the Coty and Cutty Sark Awards. The designer currently licenses sportswear, sweaters, tailored clothing, underwear, trousers, outerwear, neckwear and hosiery. September 14th marked the designer's Spring 2001 show, which took place at The Loft in New York City's Bryant Park. Be sure to keep an eye out for new, Chereskin animal products that are due to surface over the next few months. |
